TLM: Uncertainties Remain

Updated: 7 days ago

Despite words of encouragement from Pope Leo XIV, traditional Catholic practices continue to face challenges.

What will happen to the TLM now? Definitely some hopeful signs, but the news out of the Diocese of Charlotte is less than encouraging.
What will happen to the TLM now? Definitely some hopeful signs, but the news out of the Diocese of Charlotte is less than encouraging.

Pope Leo XIV has emphasized unity and reconciliation within the Church, acknowledging the deep devotion of Traditional Catholics and those attached to the Traditional Latin Mass. In his early addresses, he has expressed a desire to honor the richness of Catholic tradition while fostering a spirit of communion among all believers. His approach appears to be one of respect for liturgical heritage, with indications that he may seek to preserve and integrate the Latin Mass within the broader life of the Church.

In contrast to this hopeful start, we have this news from Bishop Michael T. Martin, who seems to be saying, "Hush! Hush, sweet Charlotte!" to parishioners in his diocese. Today, (23 May), he issued a proclamation titled "Completing the Implementation of Traditiones Custodes in the Diocese of Charlotte," which--if initial reports are accurate--will severely curtail the TLM within the confines of his diocese.

From the document circulating through social media, "Effective July 8 2025, the Traditional Latin Mass will no longer be celebrated at parish churches in the Diocese of Charlotte. In accordance with Traditiones Custodes...I am designating a chapel in the diocese where faithful adherents may gather for the celebration of the Eucharist on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation using the Roman Missal of 1962." The letter then gives the name of the chapel, a former Protestant church called the "Freedom Christian Center," conveniently located a mere 45 minutes outside Charlotte.

His Excellency's timing on this decision is a bit of a head-scratcher given the signals coming from the Holy Father.

Please continue to pray for the restoration of the Traditional Latin Mass, and for those traditionally-minded Catholics in Charlotte who are having to come to grips with their new circumstances.

Why now?! Why would the bishop do this? Does he really think a move like this promotes "unity" among his flock? Oremus!
