TLM Friends hosted a conference on April 11 as a lead-in event for Divine Mercy Sunday. In this presentation, Father Sean Connolly explores the depths of Divine Mercy by reframing the Gospel as a profound "rescue mission" where Christ, the Divine Physician, heals a wounded humanity and liberates it from the prison of death.

Here's a quick rundown of his presentation. You can find the full video at the bottom of this article!

Mr. Jim Donovan introduces Father Connolly, noting his background in the Archdiocese of New York and his current service at St. Margaret of Cortona in the Bronx. Father Connolly begins his talk by framing the "Justice and Mercy" theme within the Octave of Easter and the lead-up to Divine Mercy Sunday [03:04].

Key Theme: The Gospel as a "Rescue Mission"

Father Connolly’s central argument is that many modern Christians misunderstand the Gospel. He challenges the common "legalistic" view—that God the Father was angry and Jesus took our punishment to satisfy justice [05:34]. Instead, he proposes that:

  • Sin as Sickness: Sin should not be viewed merely as a legal violation, but as a "sickness" or a "wound" in human nature that leads to death [11:47].

  • The Divine Physician: Christ is the "Divine Physician" who comes to heal this sickness [12:11].

  • Rescue from Slavery: The Gospel is the story of God rescuing humanity from the "prison of death" and the dominion of fallen angels [13:01].

The "New Passover" (Pascha)

The speaker draws a direct parallel between the Old Testament Exodus and the Resurrection of Christ [15:43]:

  • The Old Passover: God freed Israel from physical slavery in Egypt, a nation he describes as being under the influence of demons/paganism [16:14].

  • The New Passover: Christ, the "True Passover Lamb," frees all humanity from spiritual slavery and death [18:15].

  • The Mass: He explains that every Mass represents this "New Passover" sacrifice, providing spiritual nourishment and a participation in Christ’s victory over death [18:26].

The Incarnation and Deification (Theosis)

Father Connolly emphasizes that God became man so that man could become "partakers of the divine nature" [23:05].

  • The spiritual life is not just the "avoidance of sin," but a process of being "divinized" or deified by grace [23:26].

  • He cites the Transfiguration as a "glimpse" of the future state of all believers: a total transfiguration of both soul and body [26:39].

The Mystery of Holy Saturday

A unique portion of the talk focuses on Christ’s "Descent into Hell" (the realm of the dead/Sheol) [28:48]:

  • Breaking the Doors: He describes Christ entering the realm of the dead not as a victim, but as a victor who "smashes down death’s door" with the Cross [30:20].

  • Universal Reach of Mercy: He discusses St. Peter’s writing about Christ preaching to the "spirits in prison," suggesting that the depths of divine mercy might even reach those who were "disobedient in the days of Noah" [34:02].

Conclusion: The Church Militant

Father Connolly concludes by reminding the audience that while the "definitive battle" is won, the spiritual war continues. He calls the faithful to live as "soldiers of Christ" (Church Militant), pursuing holiness not out of fear of punishment, but out of a desire to honor God’s mercy [37:02].
