TLM-FRIENDS sponsored its first ever East Coast retreat featuring three priests who explained to those attending why mercy and justice are eternally intertwined in God's plan of salvation for us.
The retreat was held April 11, the day before Low Sunday and Divine Mercy Sunday, at Blessed Sacrament Shrine and Saint Joseph's School Auditorium, Raritan, New Jersey.
Father James Miara, rector of Holy Innocents Shrine, NYC, gave us the elements of what mercy means "coming from heart or misericordia" in Latin. And he defined justice

from the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Paragraph 1807, as the "moral virtue that consists in the constant and free will to give its due to God and neighbor."
"Justice toward God is called the virtue of religion. Justice toward men disposes one to respect the rights of each other and to establish human relationships in harmony that promotes equity with regards to persons and the common good," Father Miara explained.
Father continued: "The just man often mentioned in the sacred scriptures is distinguished by habitual right thinking and conduct toward his neighbor. The Book of Leviticus 19:15 states: You shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great, but in righteousness shall not judge your neighbor...justice is the required habit of being fair and righteous in all circumstances."
Father also explained that mercy can be accomplished by deeds, word and prayer as relayed to Saint Faustina Kowalski in her Divine Mercy Diary. "No false mercy--true mercy is in desiring the salvation of souls," Miara said. "It is true that the Lord, Our God is infinitely merciful--but he is also infinitely just. There is a judgement and He is the Just judge...sadly not everybody makes it to heaven ,,,our Divine Lord never promised universal salvation."
